Polar Bears Drop Opener at Saint Anselm Tournament

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team fell to Manhattanville College, 3-2, in the opening round of play at the Saint Anselm Tournament Saturday evening. The Polar Bears fall to 1-4-0 this season as the Valiants improve to 8-1-0.

Bowdoin hit the scoreboard first in the second stanza when Maria Nicolais scored on assists from Katherine Pokrass and Shelagh Merrill.

Manhattanville fought back as Holly Nonis netted her tenth goal on the year to even the game at one. Valiant forward Shannon Coffey added another just over a minute later off an assist from Natalie Zitek.

In the third period, Alex Blackwell's insurance goal turned out to be the game-winner for Manhattanville as Polar Bear forward Alexandra Fahey scored after Bowdoin pulled their goaltender Emileigh Mercer for the extra attacker late.

Mercer had 27 saves in the losing effort, while Manhattanville goalie Sophia Kokkonis had 23 saves.
