BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Bowdoin first-year Dominique Lozzi scored
the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Polar Bear women's
ice hockey team to a 7-6 win over Sacred Heart on Tuesday evening.
Bowdoin (2-7) snaps a seven-game losing streak heading into their
final game at Dayton Arena this Saturday evening against Wesleyan
University.
A high-scoring opening period saw Bowdoin skate to a 3-0 lead
thanks to goals from Lozzi, Michaela Calnan and Alexandra Fahey.
Chelsea Young also scored in the frame as a Sacred Heart rally cut
the lead to 4-3 after one period.
The Pioneers exploded for three goals in the second period to
take a 6-4 advantage and chasing Bowdoin goaltender Kelly Keebler.
Replacement netminder Sage Santangelo settled the defense and
stopped the remaining 17 shots she faced as Bowdoin mounted a
comeback with a pair of shorthanded goals.
Shelagh Merrill scored to trim the advantage to 6-5 just 16
seconds into the third frame. With under seven minutes to play,
Katie Herter tied the game for Bowdoin off an assist from Maria
Nicolais to force overtime.
Nicolais also assisted on Lozzi's game-winner just 55 ticks into
the extra session. Keebler started in net and finished with 30
saves in 28 minutes as the teams combined for 102 shots on goal.
