BRUNSWICK, Maine - Middlebury College women's ice hockey team
used a four-goal first period en route to an 8-1 victory over
Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers, ranked third in the
latest USCHO.com Division III poll, improve to 7-1-2 this year. The
Polar Bears fall to 1-7-0 overall.
Molly Vitt propelled the Panthers in the opening frame, scoring
Middlebury's first goal just 1:29 into the contest and assisting on
the other three goals in the period. Nora Bergman scored twice in
the stanza, with junior defenseman Molly West's first career tally
giving the visitors a 4-0 advantage after 20 minutes.
Corey Cooper's backhander was the lone goal for either squad in
the second period and gave the Panthers a 5-0 lead. Haley MacKeen's
first career score pushed the advantage to 6-0 early in the third.
Bowdoin's Kate Pokrass put home a rebound off a Scooter Walsh shot
at 9:56 of the final period to give the Polar Bears their lone
tally. Another first career goal - this one by Middlebury's Jamie
Harisiades - and Anna McNally's late powerplay goal rounded out the
scoring.
Vitt finished with a goal and four assists while Bergman an assist
to go with her two goals. Lexi Bloom made 18 saves in just over 50
minutes of play for Middlebury before giving way to Becca Shaw, who
stopped three shots. Sage Santangelo made 29 saves in defeat for
Bowdoin.
