BRUNSWICK, Maine - Led by Will Hanley's 14 points, the Bowdoin
bench outscored Maine Maritime's 41-18 to lead the Polar Bear men's
basketball team to a 74-50 win on Tuesday evening. Bowdoin improves
to 7-1 overall this season, the best start for the program since
the 1999-2000 campaign. Maine Maritime falls to 2-5 this season.
Thanks to 10 first-half turnovers by Bowdoin, Maine Maritime
held a one point lead, 24-23, with 4:30 remaining in the opening
half. Consecutive hoops by Darian Reid-Sturgis gave Bowdoin a
three-point lead and keyed a 10-3 run to push the lead to 33-27 at
halftime.
The Polar Bears would never trail again as their bench scored 30
of the team's 41 points in the second half. A 9-3 run by Bowdoin
pushed the advantage to 12 points thanks to a Paul Sellew
three-pointer and running lay-in by Hanley, focing a Mariner
timeout. Hanley buried a trifecta to spark an 8-0 surge with under
ten minutes remaining to increase the Bowdoin lead to 17. The Polar
Bears would lead by as many as 27 in the closing moments.
Hanley notched double figures for the third consecutive game
while Kyle Jackson scored 13 for the Polar Bears. Tim Lane led the
squad with seven caroms as Bowdoin out-rebounded Maine Maritime
39-29 for the game. Both teams finished with 20 turnovers apiece,
but Bowdoin countered with 20 assists as well. Derek DiFrederico
was the lone Mariner in double digits with 10 points.
Bowdoin will close out their fall semester schedule Thursday
night at Colby-Sawyer.
