BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin's bench outscored Southern
Maine 26-6 to lift the Polar Bear men's basketball team to a 68-52
win over the Huskies on Tuesday evening. The Polar Bears improve to
5-1 overall this season while the Huskies drop to 1-5.
A competitive first-half saw the Polar Bears close the period on a
10-0 run to take a 36-25 lead into intermission. Randy Defeo
sparked the run with a trio of three-pointers for the Polar Bears.
Southern Maine was able to trim the lead to five points early in
the second half on a pair of Andy Tracy free-throws that cut the
advantage to 38-33 with 15:35 to go.
But Bowdoin responded with a tremendous run, outscoring the
Huskies 23-3 over the next eight minutes to put the game out of
reach. Ryan O'Connell came off the bench to net a pair of trifectas
in the run, while Will Hanley scored 10 of his points during the
surge.
Hanley led Bowdoin with 13 points while Defeo (12) and Kyle
Jackson (10) also saw double figures. Southern Maine was paced by a
game-high 15 from Sean Bergeron with Tracy (12) and Otis Smith (10)
also notching double-digits. Bowdoin connected on 12 three-pointers
for the night to USM's five. The Polar Bears also held a 33-22 edge
on the boards.
