BOX SCORE
GORHAM, Maine - A pair of rookies scored first-period goals to
lead the Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team to a
season-opening win at Southern Maine on Tuesday evening. The Polar
Bears (1-0-0) will return to action at Connecticut College on
Friday. Southern Maine falls to 2-2-0 overall with the loss.
First-years Alexandra Chlebeck and Dominique Lozzi scored just
1:28 apart in the opening frame to give Bowdoin an early advantage.
Chlebeck put home a rebound at 6:50 of the first period off assists
from Lozzi and another first-year, Shelagh Merrill. Moments later,
Lozzi buried a loose puck in front of the net to make it 2-0 Polar
Bears. Chelsea Young earned the assist on the goal.
Southern Maine would chip into the Bowdoin lead on a powerplay
in the second period with Samantha Navas' second goal of the year
trimming the lead in half at 4:16.
But Bowdoin's Kelly Keebler made the lead stand, stopping 20
shots in the victory. Kristen Gresko stopped 25 shots for Southern
Maine.
