RUMFORD, Maine – The Bowdon Nordic ski team opened the season at the Bates Carnival and also recaptured the Chummy Broomhall Cup title over the weekend.
The Polar Bears battled variable conditions and finished eighth out of all Nordic teams following the pair of skate events. On Saturday, Bowdoin claimed the Chummy Cup victory for the first time since 2020 in the de-facto Maine State Championship between Bates, Bowdoin, and Colby.
Carnival Highlights
- Teams raced on a 1.2k skate loop on Friday that featured sections of ice contrasted with sugary snow.
- Lars Sorom was the lone men's Polar Bear to race in a quarterfinal heat on Friday, finishing the day in 12th place. Eli Shifrin and William Riley were the next two Bowdoin finishers in 47th and 50th.
- Natalie Hood represented the Polar Bears in a quarterfinal race on the women's side and led the way overall with a 28th place finish. Jordan Grialou finished just outside the top-30 with a 33rd result.
- The course flipped directions on Saturday and the blustery wind abated and brought slightly warmer temperatures with falling snow. The course was shorted from a 15k to 9k due to course conditions. A staggared start resulted in congestion on the uphill section.
- Adam Carlise put together a strong race on the men's side, finishing 14th overall and two minutes off the top finisher. Riley was the second Bowdoin finisher of the day in 37th.
- Grialou put together a fantastic race and finished in the top-ten and second among NESCAC competitors. Gillian Fairfax put together a strong showing and landed in the top-20, narrowly edging teammate Mirra Payson who finished 18th.
- With strong women's results in the 8.5k Chummy Cup standings, the Polar Bears snagged the win away from the Mules by four points. Grialou, Fairfax, and Payson swept the podium. Carlisle took second on the men's side with Riley and Michael Sweeney picking up finishing points as well.
