Men's Hockey Stumbles Against Mammoths

Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin men's ice hockey team suffered a 5-3 setback to visiting Amherst on Saturday evening.
 
The Polar Bears slip to 5-8-4 (5-6-3 NESCAC) and the Mammoths improve to 7-9-2 (6-6-1 NESCAC).
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin took advantage of an early power play and went ahead 1-0 at the six minute mark. Bobby Pearl started with the puck behind Bowdoin's net and passed to Patrick Callahan along the left boards. Callahan skated up and fed Albert Washco just inside the blue line. Washco skated center and put an ice level shot past Connor Leslie.
  • Ben Kuzma evened the game ten minutes later, capitalizing on an Amherst power play. Kuzma handled around the top of Bowdoin's zone and made his way to the right circle. Kuzma went five-hole on Alex Kozic and the puck squeaked through.
  • Bobby Luca poked the puck in on the right post to give Amherst a 2-1 lead at 9:09 in the second. A minute later Connor McGinnis made it 3-1 with a wrister after winning the puck off the right boards and skating center.
  • Amherst scored a power play goal minutes into the third. Kuzma blasted a shot from the top after quick passes on the right side by Joey Verkerke and Matt Toporowski.
  • Bowdoin tallied its second power play goal of the night with a slapshot from Bobby Pearl in the slot. Patrick Callahan had the puck on the right point and slipped it center for the straightaway clap.
  • In the final two minutes, Bowdoin pulled Kozic for an extra skater and scored to make it 4-3. Patrick Callahan cleaned up a rebound on the left post off an initial shot from Andy Stoneman.
  • Sean Wrenn capped the game with an empty-netter in the final seconds.
 
By the Numbers
  • Bowdoin went 2-for-2 on the power play.
  • Amherst was 2-for-5 on the power play.
  • Kozic made 25 stops for the Polar Bears.
  • Leslie made 15 saves for the Mammoths.
