Women's Rugby Sprints Past UNE in Title Game Rematch

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's rugby team continued to roll in a 41-12 victory over in-state rival University of New England on Saturday in their home opener.

The Polar Bears were too much for the Nor'easters in a rematch of 2019's Division III title match, improving to 3-0 on the year while the visitors dropped to 1-2.

Match Highlights

After falling behind early, Jenna Clukey found gaps into the end zone at 12 minutes to answer UNE's game opening score and tie the match at 5-5.
Bowdoin extended their lead as Molly Petronzio scored twice in the first half, with Sage Kashner concerting both, giving the hosts a 19-5 edge at the break.
Petronzio opened the scoring just one minute into the second half and Colleen Doucette adding a goal line dive at 25:32 to up the lead to 29-5.
UNE closed the gap to 29-12, but Bowdoin's Ella Garnett sprinted past the UNE defense, adding two long tries sandwiched around a Sage Kashner score from 5 meters out to make it a 41-12 final.
Bowdoin's defense controlled the day, as the Polar Bears received double-digit tackle efforts from Ashlynn Autrey, Sadie McClean, Rebecca Vakarau, Colleen Doucette, and Ella Slaby
