Men's Tennis Aces Doubles in NESCAC First Round Win Over Williams

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Bowdoin College men's tennis team jumped to a 3-0 lead in doubles play en route to a 5-3 victory over Williams in the first round of the NESCAC Tournament on Friday at Middlebury College.

The Polar Bears (16-3) advance to play Amherst in the semifinals on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.

Match Highlights

  • The Polar Bears defeated Williams for the second time in a week, sweeping doubles to take a commanding lead out of the gate.
  • Justin Wang/Evan Fortier got the Polar Bears going with an 8-1 win at #2 doubles, followed by 8-6 wins by both the #1 duo of Grant Urken/Jerry Jiang and the #3 pairing of Justin Patel/Oscar Yang.
  • Williams stormed back in singles play, picking up wins at #3, #4 and #5 to deadlock the match at 3-3 with three matches remaining.
  • Jiang picked up a huge point for Bowdoin, sealing a three-set comeback win at #2 (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) and Grant Urken put the Polar Bears over the finish line with a 6-4, 6-1 straight-set victory at #1.

  • Bowdoin, the two-time defending NESCAC Champions, will look to return to the title match with a victory over Amherst tomorrow. The Polar Bears are looking for a measure of revenge as the Mammoths took the regular season meeting between the squads, 5-4, on April 14.
