Men's Tennis Finishes Second at Stag-Hen Invitational

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Bowdoin College men's tennis team finished second at this weekend's prestigious Stag-Hen Invitational hosted by Claremont Mudd Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.

The second-ranked Polar Bears defeated 38th-ranked Southwestern (Tex.) 8-1 and 11th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer 7-2 before dropping their first match of the season to sixth-ranked CMS, 7-2.

Bowdoin stands at 4-1 overall this season.

Weekend Highlights

  • The Polar Bears took a 2-1 lead in doubles play, but swept the singles matches, including five straight-set wins to defeat Southwestern.
  • Jerry Jiang, Oscar Yang, Justin Patel, Luke Carstens and Larry Zhao accounted for the straight-set wins while Grant Urken earned a three-set triumph.
  • Against Pomona-Pitzer, Bowdoin swept doubles play to take a commanding 3-0 lead on their way to the win.
  • Bowdoin clinched the victory with three-set comeback wins from Urken (3-6, 6-2, 6-1) and Jiang (4-6, 6-2, 6-1).
  • Things were looking good for Bowdoin against Claremont as the Polar Bears held a 2-1 lead in doubles play.
  • The Stags stormed back in singles play, however, winning every match, including five straight-set decisions to clinch the victory and the title.

  • The Polar Bears will have a few days off before returning to action on March 19 against Babson at the Claremont Club.
