Swimming & Diving Bests Bates in Friday Night Rivalry Showdown

LEWISTON, Maine – The Bowdoin men's and women's swimming and diving teams both earned wins over in-state rival Bates on Friday evening.

The 23rd-ranked Polar Bears defeated the 25th-ranked Bobcats 171-125 on the women's side. The men topped Bates 184-116.

Women's Meet

  • On one meter first-year Wren Sablich won with 246.60 points, followed by Thea Kelsey (233.24) and Rebecca Stern (216.06). Stern won three meter with a score of 236.24 points, ahead of Sablich (229.87) and Kelsey (192.15).
  • Bowdoin opened the swimming portion with a third place finish in the 200 medley relay. The team bounced back, evening the score with a one-two-three finish in the 1000 free. First-year Kathleen Kemp touched in 10:46.69. She was followed by sophomores Nadia Eguchi (10:51.63) and Ellie Wargo (10:52.40).
  • Senior Sterling Dixon swam a dominant 200 freestyle, winning the event in 1:52.96. First-year Kate Fosburgh swam a close race and settled for third in 1:54.98.
  • Sophomore Cecilia de Havenon was the team's top finisher in the 50 back, picking up fourth place points with a 28.97. In the 50 breaststroke juniors Audrey Aitelli and Caitlin Loi were third and fourth in 33.14 and 33.24, respectively. 
  • In her first event of the meet, sophomore Mary Laurita edged the Bates competition by .01 seconds to win the 100 butterfly in 57.42. Laurita also won the 50 fly (26.05).
  • Junior Amanda Banasiak was first to the wall in the 50 free in 24.77. Her classmate Marshall Lowery was third in 24.91, just .01 behind the runner up. 
  • The Polar Bears swept the top three spots in the 100 freestyle with Laurita (54.09), Fosburgh (54.35), and Banasiak (54.61).
  • Lowery returned to win the 100 backstroke in 59.00. First-years Jess Gearan (1:02.29) and Carly Dickson (1:02.31) picked up fourth and fifth.
  • Dixon earned second place points in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:09.28. Aitelli (1:12.10) and Loi (1:12.98) were fourth and fifth. Dixon came back to win the 100 IM with a 1:00.69 while Lowery was third in 1:02.33 and senior Ally Fromson-Ho touched fourth in 1:03.03.
  • Fosburgh had another tight race in the 500 freestyle. She finished runner up in 5:09.92. Kemp (5:15.40) was third and Eguchi (5:17.36) touched fourth.
  • The team ended the meet with an exclamation mark as Laurita, Banasiak, Lowery, and Dixon combined to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:38.04.

Men's Meet

  • The divers got the team off to a solid start, with senior Mitchell Ryan winning one meter with 301.88 points. First-year Henry Isaacson was second with 222.22 points while Irfan Dotani picked up fourth place with a score of 188.48.
  • On the three meter board Ryan was first again, with a score of 295.95, while Isaacson finished second with 256.83 and Dotani was fourth with 187.88 points.
  • The men won the opening 200 medley relay as the team of Justin Yang, Michael Tirone, Jacob Baltaytis, and Andrew Macdonald combined for a 1:36.17.
  • Daniel Williams (9:56.25), Coleman Komishane (10:09.86), and Gabriel Siwady (10:13.85) were the top three finishers in the 1000 freestyle. Senior Karl Sarier followed that up with a 200 freestyle victory in 1:44.27.
  • In the 50 backstroke first-years Yang (24.38) and Ted Mebust (24.49) finished first and second. Yang (53.14) and Mebust (53.18) also went one-two in the 100 backstroke.
  • Stephen Pastoriza (27.67) and Tirone (27.74) added third and fourth place points in the 50 breaststroke. Tirone was then third in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:00.22 while Pastoriza was fourth with a time of 1:00.46.
  • Baltaytis won the 100 butterfly by a half second in 52.52.
  • Mebust led a one-two finish in the 50 free, touching in 21.92, just ahead of teammate Julian Abaldo in 22.02. Abaldo got a win in the 50 fly with a 23.93, just faster than Baltaytis in 24.03.
  • Sarier was first to the wall in the 100 free with a time of 47.31. Abaldo touched third (48.13) and Komishane picked up fifth place in 49.27.
  • Komishane won a close 500 freestyle in 4:48.74. Williams touched third with a 4:52.71. Siwady and Macdonald tied for fifth in 5:01.19.
  • Sarier and Pastoriza were second and third in the 100 IM with times of 54.36 and 56.11.
  • The team of Mebust, Baltaytis, Abaldo, and Sarier pulled off one final victory, taking the 200 freestyle relay by .03, with a time of 1:27.96.
