Second-Ranked Men's Tennis Splits Weekend Matches

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Bowdoin College men's tennis team rallied to defeat Brandeis on Friday before losing their first match of the season on Saturday at Middlebury in action this weekend.

The second-ranked Polar Bears suffer their first setback and drop to 12-1 this season. Brandeis is ranked 17th in the latest Division III poll while Middlebury stands sixth.

Brandeis Highlights

  • The Polar Bears dug themselves a hole in doubles action before battling back to defeat the Judges, 6-3, on Friday night.
  • The #1 doubles pairing of Luke Tercek/Grant Urken won an 8-3 decision to give the Polar Bears life heading into singles action.
  • From there, Bowdoin won four straight-set singles matches to seal the win, from Urken (6-1, 7-6), Tercek (7-5, 6-3), Gil Roddy (6-4, 6-1) and Justin Patel (6-3, 6-2).
  • Kyle Wolfe capped the day with a three-set win at #3, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Middlebury Highlights

  • The Panthers sprinted to a 3-0 lead in doubles play and never looked back in taking an 8-1 victory over the Polar Bears in the latest entry in the rivalry between the squads Saturday in Vermont.
  • Roddy/Patel played the closest doubles match, falling 9-8 at #3.
  • In singles play, Roddy earned the lone point for Bowdoin, taking a 7-5, 6-1 win at #5.
