Men's Tennis Nets 2018 Stag-Hen Invitational Crown

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Bowdoin College men's tennis team made an early-season statement, picking up a 7-2 win at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to win the 2018 Stag-Hen Invitational on Tuesday afternoon in California.

In a battle of two of the nation's top teams, the fourth-ranked Polar Bears remain unbeaten at 4-0 this spring while the second-ranked Stags drop to 10-2.

Match Highlights

  • Bowdoin got on the board with a win at #3 doubles from Gil Roddy and Justin Patel (8-3) and then carried a 2-1 lead into singles play when Luke Tercek and Grant Urken rallied at #1 doubles for a 8-6 win.
  • Impressive straight-set wins by Jerry Jiang at #4 (6-1, 6-1) and Gil Roddy (6-4, 6-2) put the Polar Bears on the edge of the victory.
  • Justin Patel clinched it with a three-set triumph, coming from behind in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win.
  • With the match already decided, Bowdoin finished it off by winning two of the three remaining matches, from Urken at #1 (7-6, 6-3, 7-6) and Tercek at #2 (7-5, 3-6, 6-2).

  • The Polar Bears will be right back at it on Wednesday when they face 12th-ranked Carnegie Mellon in Claremont at 5:00 p.m. local time.
