BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's rugby team celebrated their 15th season as a varsity program with a season-opening 29-15 win over the University of Maine-Orono on Saturday at Pickard Field.

The Polar Bears stand at 1-0 this season after the victory.

Match Highlights

• Bowdoin senior co-captain Kendall Schutzer led the way with three tries and solid tackling to set the defensive tone for the match.
• Hard running by fellow center Mackenzie Philbrick and #8 Satya Kent bolstered the Polar Bears offense while senior co-captain Vianney Gomezgil Yaspik had several aggressive poaches from UMaine rucks to stifle their attack.
• Bowdoin carried a 17-0 lead into intermission following two tries from Schutzer, one from Gomezgil and a conversion given, as the first try awarded was a penalty try.
• Following Kent's long yardage gain from a #8 pick up, Juliette Dankens supported, took an offload pass and sprinted the final 20 meters to open the second half scoring. Flyhalf Liz D'Angelo notched the two-point conversion.
• Maine upped the pressure in the second half, and capitalized on a Bowdoin penalty to put three points on the board, 24-3, and took advantage of some missed defensive assignments to cut into Bowdoin's lead late in the game, closing the final score to 29-17.
