Men's Tennis Dominates Top-Seeded Wesleyan in NESCAC Semifinals

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Bowdoin College men's tennis team dominated top-seeded Wesleyan from start-to-finish, sweeping the Cardinals in a 5-0 decision in the NESCAC Semifinals on Saturday at Williams College.

The Polar Bears (17-4) advance to Sunday's NESCAC Championship for the second straight season and will battle the winner of the Middlebury-Williams semifinal at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday for the crown.

Match Highlights

  • The story was much different than the last meeting between the schools played last Sunday and won by Wesleyan, 6-3, as Bowdoin swept doubles play to jump ahead and never looked back.
  • Gil Roddy and Justin Patel gave the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead when they dispatched Steven Chen and Cameron Daniels at #1 doubles, 8-4. Luke Tercek and Grant Urken made it 2-0 with a hard-fought 9-7 win over Michael Liu and Jake Roberts at #1 doubles,
  • Kyle Wolfe and Jerry Jiang completed the sweep with an 8-6 victory at #2 doubles, giving the Polar Bears a 3-0 edge.
  • Bowdoin did not waste time in finishing off the match as Urken defeated Liu at #2 singles, 6-0, 6-1 and Roddy took care of #5 singles, 6-1, 6-4.

Up Next

  • The Polar Bears will be making their second-straight appearance in the NESCAC title match and fourth overall. Bowdoin's lone NESCAC Championship came over Middlebury in 2008.
  • Bowdoin lost to Middlebury (6-3) and defeated Williams (5-4) in early-season meetings against their potential opponents in the final.
