Men's Tennis Repeat Hopes Dashed By Emory in NCAA Semifinals

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Emory University men's tennis team won the first four completed singles matches to rally past Bowdoin, 5-2, in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Championship on Tuesday evening.

The loss ends Bowdoin's hopes of a repeat national championship as the NESCAC champs end another fantastic season with a school-record 21 victories against just five losses. Emory advances to play Claremont Mudd Scripps in the NCAA title match on Wednesday afternoon.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

  • The teams split the first two completed doubles matches with Bowdoin earning a win at #2 from Kyle Wolfe and Jerry Jiang (8-5)  while Emory claimed the #1 position thanks to Scott Rubinstein/James Spaulding, 8-5.
  • The number three doubles match went to a tiebreak where the Polar Bear duo of Gil Roddy/Justin Patel earned a 9-8 (7-4) win to give Bowdoin a 2-1 edge heading to singles.
  • The Eagles came out firing in singles play, however, getting straight-set wins at number one from Aman Manji, number six Scott Rubenstein and number three Adrian Bouchet to take a 4-2 advantage.
  • With the three remaining matches in third sets, Jonathan Jemison earned a late break against Grant Urken at number two singles and held serve to claim the match-clinching 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 win.
  • The victory is a measure of revenge for the Eagles, who lost to the Polar Bears in the NCAA semifinals a year ago, 5-4.

UP NEXT

  • Bowdoin's doubles pairing of Luke Tercek and Grant Urken will compete in the NCAA Individual championship that begins on Thursday. Pairings will be announced on Wednesday.
