Box Score MEDFORD - With the tying run on third base, Bowdoin reliever Jack Wilhoite got a strikeout to end the game and give the visiting Polar Bears a 3-2 win at Tufts in NESCAC East Division baseball action on Sunday at Huskins Field.
With the victory, Bowdoin (12-14, 4-5 NESCAC) staved off elimination from the upcoming NESCAC Tournament. Tufts (21-5-1, 6-3 NESCAC) entered with a magic number of one and can clinch when they host a three-game series against Bates next weekend.
Game Highlights
- Bowdoin scored twice in the second inning after Evann Dumont-LaPointe reached on an error. He went to second on a single by Sawyer Billings. After a sacrifice moved both up a base, Wilhote's ground out scored Dumont-LaPointe. Bjorn Hansen followed with an infield single plating Billings.
- The Polar Bears padded their margin to 3-0 in the sixth when Joe Gentile and Colby Joncas opened the inning with singles setting up first and third with no outs. Dumont-LaPointe hit a sacrifice fly scoring Gentile.
- The Polar Bears took a 3-0 lead into the late innings before Will Shackelford hit a two-out, two-run single in the seventh closing the gap to 3-2.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Casey Santos-Ocampo led off with a double to left and was sacrificed to third. Wilhoite entered and induced a pop up to shortstop and the strikeout to earn his first save.
By the Numbers
- Colby Lewis (3-2) allowed just three hits and two runs in 6.1 innings for Bowdoin today, striking out five and walking two.
- Tufts starter R.J. Hall (2-2) completed seven innings for Tufts giving up six hits and three runs with three strikeouts and no walks.
- Billings was the lone Polar Bear batter to record multiple hits in the game.
