Jumbos Open Series With Doubleheader Sweep

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Bowdoin baseball team surrendered six runs in both games against Tufts on Saturday afternoon to fall in the series doubleheader.

The Polar Bears (11-14, 3-5 NESCAC) fell 6-1 in the opener and couldn't complete the comeback in a 6-5 game two. Tufts improves to 21-4-1 (6-2 NESCAC).

Game One Highlights

  • The Jumbos went up 3-0 in the bottom of the first. Mike McLaughlin doubled to left center and drove in a pair of runs. Harry Brown lofted a sacrifice fly to left and drove in a third.
  • Bowdoin cut into Tufts lead, making it 3-1, in the top of the second. Evann Dumont-LaPointe drove in Colby Joncas with a single to left. The run stood as the lone tally for Bowdoin.
  • The hosts added two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Oscar Kutch recorded an RBI double and Tommy O'Hara had a run producing single to right.
  • O'Hara capped the game with a solo homerun to right in the fourth.
  • Brandon Lopez surrendered seven hits and five runs in 2.2 innings of work. Speros Varinos went all seven innings for Tufts and allowed five hits while collecting 11 strikeouts.

Game Two Highlights

  • Bowdoin surrendered five runs in the first four innings, before climbing back in the second half of the game.
  • Tufts put up runs in the first three innings to jump out to a 4-0 lead. O'Hara continued his successful day with his second RBI of the game in the fourth, singling through the right side.
  • Eric Mah started the rally for Bowdoin with an RBI double to right center in the fifth. Dumont-LaPointe followed suite in the following inning. Sean Mullaney quickly followed with a groundout that drove in Joncas from third.
  • The Jumbos scored the difference maker in the bottom of the sixth. The team's sixth and final run came off an RBI single to center from Nick Falkson.
  • Bowdoin added runs in the seventh and ninth innings. Lopez hit an RBI singled and Eric Mah cut the deficit to one in the final inning.
  • Max Vogel-Freedman pitched six innings for Bowdoin and allowed nine hits with seven strikeouts. Tim Superko struck out eight Polar Bear batters in five innings for Tufts.
