Men's Tennis Reaches Third NCAA Quarterfinal With Win Over MIT

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's tennis team advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the third time in program history with a 5-2 win over MIT in the regional final of the Division III Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Maine Pines.

The Polar Bears (17-3) advance to the quarterfinals in Kalamazoo, Michigan, next weekend where they will play Johns Hopkins. More information about the finals site will be announced on Monday. MIT ends its season with a record of 16-5.

Match Highlights

  • Bowdoin led 2-0 in doubles play thanks to wins from Chase Savage/Gil Roddy at number three (8-4) and Kyle Wolfe/Jerry Jiang at number two (8-5).
  • MIT trimmed the lead to 2-1 with a victory at number one doubles, 8-5, courtesy of Alex Cauneac/Bryan Lilley
  • The Engineers closed out the first singles match quickly as Cauneac defeated Luke Tercek, 6-1, 6-1 to deadlock the team score at 2-2
  • Bowdoin won the first set on the other five matches, however, and closed to within a single point of clinching when Grant Urken won at number six (6-3, 6-1) and Gil Roddy triumphed at number five (6-2, 6-4)
  • With three matches remaining in the balance, Luke Trinka was the first to seal the deal, closing out Tyler Barr in a straight-set battle, 6-3, 6-4 to send Bowdoin to Kalamazoo
  • It marked the second-straight day a Trinka closed out an NCAA match as Luke's sister Tess won the clinching point of the Bowdoin women's NCAA regional final on Saturday against Tufts
