Big Fifth Inning Lifts Baseball to Blowout Win Over Bates

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Sparked by a ten-run fifth inning, the Bowdoin College baseball team coasted to a 13-1 win over Bates in the opener of a three-game set between the teams on Friday at Pickard Field.

The Polar Bears improve to 10-6 (2-2 NESCAC) while the Bobcats fall to 7-12 (0-3 NESCAC). The teams will play a doubleheader in Lewiston tomorrow.

Game Highlights

  • After the teams traded zeroes through the first three frames, Bowdoin took advantage of Bates miscues to plate three unearned runs in the fourth
  • After two errors and a walk, Chris Nadeau was hit by a pitch to force home a run. Ejazz Jiu knocked a sacrifice fly to left and Luke Cappellano scored on a wild pitch to give the hosts a three-run edge
  • Bowdoin poured it on with a season-high ten runs in the fifth inning. Cappellano started the rally with a two-run double, followed by RBI hits from Jiu and Stephen Girolamo
  • A throwing error on the potential third out of the inning brought home two more Polar Bear runs before a fielding error scored another for Bowdoin
  • Peter Cimini capped the inning with a two-run double to make it a 13-0 contest
  • That proved good enough for Bowdoin's Harry Ridge, who improved to 3-1 with 6.0 innings, allowing just four hits and no runs
  • Bates' lone run came in the eighth when Ryan McCarthy came home on a double by Daniel Trulli
  • Connor Colombo (1-4) was tagged with the loss despite permitting no earned runs in 3.2 innings of work

  • Bowdoin scored 13 runs on just six hits on the day
  • The Polar Bears took advantage of five Bates errors, eight walks and two hit batters in the win
