Box Score 2 BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin and Tufts baseball split a doubleheader at Pickard Field on Saturday with the Jumbos claiming game one, 16-0, before Bowdoin rallied in game two, 5-2.
The Jumbos stand at 25-6 (10-1) after losing their first NESCAC East Division game of the season. Bowdoin moves to 20-12 (4-8), reaching the 20-win plateau for the first time since 2013.
Game One Highlights
- Tufts scored 13 runs in the final three innings to pull away for a 16-0 win
- The Jumbos scored single runs in the first on a Dan Kelly RBI single, in the third on a passed ball and in the fourth on a Cody McCallum RBI hit
- The Jumbos then exploded late in the contest to pull away from the win
- McCallum had three hits, including four RBI for Tufts. O'Hara had three hits and four runs scored while Kelly went 3-3 with two walks in the win
- Speros Varinos was outstanding on the hill for Tufts, allowing just two hits over seven innings while striking out five
- Bowdoin's Brandon Lopez took the loss, permitting five earned runs over 4.0 innings
Game Two Highlights
- Bowdoin handed Tufts its first conference loss of the season behind seven strong innings from Michael Staes in a 5-2 victory
- The Polar Bears scored twice in the first inning as a double-steal allowed Brandon Lopez and Joe Gentile to come home on ground outs later in the inning
- Bowdoin crossed three more runs over the plate in the third as Chris Nadeau delivered an RBI single, Sean Mullaney delivered a sac fly and Colby Joncas rapped an RBI single as well to push the lead to 5-0
- Tufts chipped away at Bowdoin's lead with an RBI fielder's choice by Cody McCallum in the seventh and made it a 5-2 game in the eighth when Mike McLaughlin drove a run-scoring single to left
- Kyle Stanley was able to get out of trouble in the eighth and worked out of a jam in the ninth as well to earn the save.
- Joe Gentile had three hits in the win for Bowdoin while Staes earned the win with 7.0 innings, permitting two earned runs and striking out five
- Andrew David took the loss for Tufts, allowing five runs over 6.0 innings. Tom Petry and Harrison Frickman had two hits apiece for the Jumbos
