Baseball Splits With Continentals in Non-Conference Doubleheader

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Bowdoin baseball team rebounded from its first loss of the season to take game two in a non-conference doubleheader against Hamilton.

The Polar Bears are 8-1 following the Wednesday split that began with a 14-8 loss to the Continentals (8-4). Bowdoin responded with a 4-1 victory in game two. 

Game One Highlights

  • Hamilton jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second, capitalizing on a double and pair of singles. Kenny Collins wrapped a two-run single to right before Bowdoin could force a third out.
  • Another two hits in the following inning resulted in two more runs for Hamilton.
  • The Continentals greatest offensive output came in the fourth with a six run inning. Three singles, a two run double off the bat of Brian Ferrell, and a wild pitch accounted for the run tally.
  • Bowdoin broke through in the bottom half of the inning. Luke Cappellano tagged an RBI single to right center and Colby Joncas sent a fly ball to center that scored Evann Dumont-LaPoint to cut into Hamilton's lead.
  • David Rose doubled down the leftfield line, driving in two more runs, in the top of the sixth.
  • Bowdoin rallied with one run in the bottom half of the inning and five runs in the seventh, but was unable to overcome Hamilton.
  • Jack Wilhoite scored off a wild pitch. Joe Gentile doubled to left center and drove in a pair, followed by a single down the line from Dumont-LaPointe for two more. Sawyer Billings had Bowdoin's final RBI with a single through the right side.
  • The Bowdoin pitching staff allowed a total of 16 hits and 14 runs, nine earned, while only tallying five K's.

Game Two Highlights

  • Bowdoin jumped out to an early lead with a three-run first inning. Dumont-LaPointe tagged a two-run double to right center and eventually came around to score on a passed ball.
  • Sean Mullaney put the ball in play with two outs in the second, allowing Brandon Lopez to score.
  • Ben Osterholtz pitched four shutout innings for Bowdoin, allowing two walks, before Connor Rooney stepped in to close out the final three innings.
  • Brett Mele spoiled Bowdoin's shutout with a single through the right side in the bottom of the seventh.
