Second-Half Rally Pushes Claremont Over Bowdoin in Women's Basketball

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont Mudd Scripps women's basketball team outscored Bowdoin 14-6 in the overtime session to hand the Polar Bears their first defeat of the season, 70-62, on Thursday evening in California.

The 13th-ranked Polar Bears fall to 8-1 this year while the Athenas improve to 5-5.

Game Highlights

  • Bowdoin led for the entire first half and held a 28-19 lead at halftime thanks to a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Kate Kerrigan.
  • The Athenas clawed back into the game thanks to strong defense and outscored Bowdoin 18-12 in the third quarter to trim the lead to 40-37 heading into the fourth.
  • CMS scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter to take their first lead of the contest, 41-40, and the teams traded buckets for the next six minutes.
  • Bowdoin appeared to be in good shape as a three-pointer by Lydia Caputi sparked a quick run that gave the Polar Bears a six-point lead, 56-50, with 2:30 to play.
  • But Bowdoin went scoreless for the remainder of regulation as CMS closed on a 6-0 run to send the game into overtime.
  • The Athenas dominated the extra session, scoring the first 11 points to put the game on ice.
