Simonds' Career-High Leads Men's Basketball To Season-Opening Win

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Jack Simonds scored a career-high 31 points to lead the Bowdoin College men's basketball team in a comeback victory over Southern Vermont at the UMass Dartmouth/Hampton Inn Classic on Friday evening, 74-71.

The Polar Bears (1-0) will battle UMass Dartmouth tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m. Southern Vermont falls to 1-1 on the season.

Game Highlights

  • Southern Vermont held a 26-25 lead at halftime and extended their advantage to as many as ten points early in the second half, 35-25.
  • A 10-4 Bowdoin run later in the period trimmed the Southern Vermont lead to 41-38 on a Simonds jumper with 13:51 to go and Bowdoin stayed within a possession until midway through the frame when consecutive three-pointers by Simonds and Liam Farley regained the lead for the Polar Bears, 50-48.
  • The teams traded buckets and found themselves tied at 67 apiece with 2:17 remaining.
  • Bowdoin made two big defensive stops and Liam Farley hit a pair of free throws to give Bowdoin the lead for good, followed by two more from Jack Simonds that made it 71-67 with 1:19 remaining
  • After a Southern Vermont lay-up trimmed the lead to 71-69, a Tim Ahn free throw pushed the lead back to three points, 72-69, with 25 ticks on the clock.
  • Rayshawn Taylor made a lay-up with 12 seconds left for Southern Vermont that cut the lead to  71-70, and his team had a chance to go ahead with under ten seconds left, but a missed lay-in and a pair of ensuing free throws from David Reynolds put the game on ice.

By The Numbers

  • Bowdoin finished at 56% shooting for the game, but Southern Vermont connected on 12 three-pointers to keep it close despite hitting on just 37% from the field.
  • The Polar Bears held a 39-31 edge in rebounding for the game, led by 11 from Hugh O'Neil
  • Jack Simonds led all players with 31 points  to go with five rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
  • Liam Farley (14), David Reynolds (11) and Tim Ahn (10) also saw double-figures in the victory.
  • Daemond Carter led Southern Vermont with 18 points.
