Men's Tennis Blanks Bantams in Opener at NESCAC Championship

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Bowdoin College men's tennis team swept doubles play en route to a 5-0 shutout of Trinity in the opening round of the NESCAC Tournament on Friday morning at Middlebury College.

The third-seeded Polar Bears (14-4) advance to the NESCAC Semifinals on Saturday morning where they will face the host Panthers at 9:00 a.m. Sixth-seeded Trinity ends its season with a record of 10-5.

Bowdoin opened the day with a win at #3 doubles as Noah Bragg and Kyle Wolfe fought off a match point and won the final three games of an eventual 9-7 triumph to put the Polar Bears up 1-0. Kyle Wolstencroft and Gil Roddy followed closely with a 8-5 win at #2 to increase Bowdoin's advantage to 2-0. Trinity made a bid to remain in contention at #1 doubles, but Bowdoin's pairing of Luke Trinka and Luke Tercek prevailed in a tiebreaker to win 9-8 and give the Polar Bears a commanding 3-0 lead heading into singles.

Needing just two victories to clinch the win, Roddy quickly took care of business at #6, earning a 6-3, 6-1 win. Wolstencroft finished off the Bantams at #5 singles, taking a 6-1, 6-0 victory to seal it.

Bowdoin will be looking to return to the NESCAC Championship match for the first time since 2012. The Polar Bears suffered a 8-1 loss to Middlebury in the regular season meeting on April 18, in a match that was closer than the final score indicated as Bowdoin lost a trio of three-set decisions in singles play.
