Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine - A three-run homer from Brendon Joyce in the fifth inning for broke open a tight game as the University of Southern Maine went on to a 6-2 victory over Bowdoin on Thursday afternoon.
The Huskies improve to 25-10 on the season while the Polar Bears drop to 14-18. Bowdoin concludes the regular season on Saturday with a non-conference doubleheader at home against Middlebury beginning at 12:00 p.m. Southern Maine is also slated to play a pair the same day in home conference action against UMass-Dartmouth.
Southern Maine got pushed a run across the plate early, taking a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. Sam Dexter doubled in the number two spot and moved to third on a stolen base, putting the junior in position to score off a Matt Bender sacrifice fly to right field. Bowdoin responded in the bottom of the following inning after Sam Canales doubled to left to put himself in scoring position. Stephen Girolamo drove in Canales with an RBI single to even the score a 1-1.
After two scoreless innings Joyce cleared the right field fence to tally a three run homerun and secure Southern Maine's lead for the rest of the game. Bowdoin got one back from the Huskies in the bottom half of the fifth as Aaron Rosen drove in Joe Gentile. Leading 4-2 after five complete innings, the Huskies added runs in the sixth and seventh innings to extend their lead. Paul McDonough and Anthony Capuano drove in a run, adding to their team's total.
Bobby Delaney earned the win on the mound for Southern Maine, going seven innings while allowing six hits with three strikeouts and as many walks. Michael Staes pitched five innings for Bowdoin with two walks and a pair of K's. Jon Fraser came in to close out the ninth inning for the Polar Bears and fanned three of the four batters he faced.
