Baseball Splits Saturday Slate with Colby to Take Two of Three

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Bowdoin baseball team took two out of three games against Colby in their NESCAC East series with a split decision on Saturday afternoon after taking the first game 5-3 and dropping game two 4-3 in extra innings.

The Mules are 16-11 overall and finish 5-7 in the NESCAC East for the second straight year. Bowdoin moved to 13-17 overall and 5-6 in the conference. Bowdoin concludes its conference schedule with a 4:00 p.m. game against Bates on Tuesday.

Game One Recap -  Bowdoin 5, Colby 3

In the first game, Jason Buco homered to left on a line drive to give Colby a 1-0 lead after the opening inning.

Bowdoin took control in the second putting four runs on the board. Peter Cimini led off with a walk and took third when Sam Canales reached on an error. Chris Nadeau sacrificed to get Canales to second and earned an RBI when Cimini scored. Sean Mullaney followed with a single to right field to bring in Canales. Chris Cameron tripled to center to plate Mullaney with the third run. Erik Jacobsen singled to right to score the final run.

The Mules cut the margin to 4-2 after two innings when Ellenthal singled to lead off. He took second base on a single by Ryder Arsenault and then scored on Buco's single to right field.

Chad Martin led off the third inning with a double for the Polar Bears and scored on Cole DiRoberto's single for Bowdoin's final run. Buco homered to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning for Colby's third run.

Bowdoin's Harry Ridge pitched all seven innings in the first game, striking out six and walking one.

Game Two Recap – Colby 4, Bowdoin 3

The Polar Bears seemed to be cruising to a doubleheader sweep heading into the sixth inning of game two. Buco changed the pace of the game with a lead off homer to left field to get the bats going in the bottom half. Zach Ellenthal followed with a double to right field and Andrew Della Volpe doubled to left and suddenly the Mules were down 3-2.

Colby tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth inning. Della Volpe singled to start the inning. After a pitching change by Bowdoin, Nils Carlson doubled to left field to bring in Della Volpe.

In extra innings, Tommy Forese drew a one-out walk to give Colby a spark. Grant Lowensohn singled to center field and Forese reached third. After another pitching change, Buco was intentionally walked to load the bases. Ellenthal followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Forese.

Greg Ladd worked the first seven innings and allowed just two earned runs. Dan Schoenfeld pitched the final three innings for Colby to earn the win.
