Box Score 2 BRUNSWICK, Maine – Trinity's offense came alive in the final inning of game two to break open a tie ballgame and capture a 6-3 win to cap the Bantams' Saturday sweep of Bowdoin baseball after taking the first game 1-0.
The Polar Bears fall to 10-16 on the season and 3-5 in NESCAC play after capturing the series opener on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals pull to .500 overall with a 12-12 mark, while sporting a 4-5 NESCAC record.
Game One Recap- Trinity 1, Bowdoin 0
Both pitchers went all seven innings for their teams in the day's opening game, with Sean Meekins earning the shutout win with nine strikeouts and one walk. The senior hurler allowed just three hits. Erik Jacobsen tallied two K's on the mound for Bowdoin with four hits. The righty allowed no walks in his outing.
Bowdoin's Chris Cameron accounted for one of those hits against Meekins in the leadoff spot in the bottom of the first, but the side was later retired in order. Tyler Forgione managed a single in the top of the second for the Bantams, but was also left stranded as next two batters were retired. The only scoring of the game in the top of the fourth as Bryan Wolfe hit a two-out single up the middle to take first. Forgione followed with a single through the left side, pushing Wolfe into scoring position. Scott Cullinane drove home the game's lone run, singling to left, giving the Bantams the 1-0 lead and eventual win. The bottom of the fifth was the only remaining at-bat where either team was not retired in order. Tom Wells led off for Bowdoin with a single to left, but the Polar Bears were unable to capitalize.
Game Two Recap- Trinity 6, Bowdoin 3
Trinity and Bowdoin remained tied, 2-2, through five innings before the Bantams put four runs on the board in the ninth to clinch the series in game two. Nicholas Fusco got the start for Trinity, with Harry Ridge taking the mound for Bowdoin, as both pitchers allowed six hits, two runs, and a homer in seven innings of work. Fusco was relieved early in the eighth by Sam Jordan who recorded the win with three hit and one earned run.
The Polar Bears struck first in the bottom of the second after loading the bases with no outs. Chad Martin, Cole DiRoberto, and Wells all singled to fill the bases, with Martin scoring off a wild pitch. Trinity escaped the inning, allowing just the one run, as Fusco tallied a pair of strikeouts and induced groundout. The Bantams responded quickly with a leadoff double down the leftfield line from Adam Moossmann. The runner advanced to third on a groundout and scored off an Evan Abraham RBI. Nick Pezzella quickly gave Trinity the lead as he blasted a shot to straightaway center field. Aaron Rosen evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom half of the inning as he launched a ball down the left field line, clearing the fence.
The Bantams' bats came alive in the top of the ninth, beginning with a Jonathan Frank single up the middle. Wolfe followed by taking first after being hit by a pitch, and Frank advanced to third on a fielder's choice. Moossmann knocked an RBI single through the left side, quickly followed by a Connor Sullivan RBI single to center. Bowdoin couldn't escape the inning until two more Trinity runners crossed the plate, extending the score to 6-2, off an Abraham single to left. Bowdoin got one run back in the bottom half of the inning as Wells drove in Chad Martin.
Bowdoin hosts Thomas College on Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The Bantams return to action on the same day at Western Connecticut State beginning at 5:00 p.m.
