BRUNSWICK, Maine - Senior Henry Van Zant spun another gem to lead the Bowdoin College baseball team over Trinity, 3-1, in the opener of an important three-game NESCAC East Division Series at Pickard Field on Friday afternoon.

Van Zant improved to 5-1 on the season with the complete game victory that moved the Polar Bears to 10-14 (3-3 NESCAC). Trinity's Jed Robinson countered with a solid performance in defeat as the Bantams fall to 10-12 (2-5 NESCAC). The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Bowdoin got all the offense it would need thanks to a two-out rally in the first inning. Aaron Rosen reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. Chad Martin singled him home to give Bowdoin a 1-0 lead and then stole second base himself. After a walk to Cole DiRoberto, Bjorn Hansen rifled a single to left to plate Martin. Bowdoin tacked on another run in the third when Erik Jacobsen reached base on a hit by pitch. One batter later Martin tripled him home to make it 3-0 Polar Bears.

Van Zant did not allow a hit until the sixth inning when Connor Sullivan led off with a single. The Bantams mounted a rally in the seventh inning when Bryan Wolfe doubled with one out and scored on a single by Tyler Forgione. Van Zant squashed the rally, however, retiring the last two batters of the frame.

The senior righthander finished with seven strikeouts, permitting just four hits and one earned run. Robinson countered with a complete game for Trinity, allowing six hits and striking out five. Martin finished 2-4 with two RBI for Bowdoin. Matthew Toth reached base twice for Trinity.
