AMHERST, Mass. – The Bowdoin women's tennis team came just shy of a comeback as the Polar Bears fell 5-4 to Amherst on Saturday afternoon.
The third ranked Lord Jeffs (9-1, 3-0 NESCAC) carried a 2-1 edge over Bowdoin (8-3, 3-1 NESCAC) into singles action. The contest was the closest finish of the spring season for Amherst.
Bowdoin's #2 pairing of Tess Trinka and Kyra Silitch combined to earn a point for the Polar Bears in doubles play, defeating their opponents 8-5.
Trailing 2-1 after doubles, the Polar Bears came back and split singles by capturing wins at #2, #5, and #6. Silitch had the most dominant performance of the day for Bowdoin at #6, downing her challenger (6-1, 6-1). Pilar Giffenig captured a win at #5 with two hard fought sets (7-6, 7-5) to keep Bowdoin alive. Tiffany Cheng secured the final point for the Polar Bears at #2 with a (7-6, 2-6, 10-5) finish.
Bowdoin will look to rebound with a pair of matches tomorrow at Hamilton. The Polar Bears face off against the Continentals at 9:00 a.m. and Skidmore at 2:00 p.m.
