Box Score 2 MIDDLETOWN, Conn. –The Bowdoin baseball team split a low scoring Saturday afternoon doubleheader against Wesleyan, capturing a 1-0 win in day's opener before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.
Bowdoin concludes the day at 8-12 overall, while the Cardinals improve to 14-5 in this NESCAC East vs. West showdown.
Game One Recap – Bowdoin 1, Wesleyan 0
Henry Van Zant pitched to his fourth win of the season with four strikeouts and one walk. The senior hurler allowed eight hits in seven shutout innings on the mound. Gavin Pittore also pitched a complete game for the Cardinals, collecting seven strikeouts and three walks. Pittore allowed just two hits in Saturday's opener.
The Polar Bears escaped a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the second after the Cardinals strung together three consecutive singles. Van Zant induced a flyout to right, ending the inning and Wesleyan threat. The pitching battle continued through the top of the fifth, as neither team would send more than four batters to the plate. In the bottom half of the inning, Anew Yin led off with a single to center that was quickly followed by another from Donnie Cimino. After the first out of the inning, the Cardinals put another ball in play but saw Yin tagged out at home as he tried to score from second. Cimino accounted for the final out as he was caught stealing at the plate.
Bowdoin put the only run of the game on the board in the top of the seventh after Aaron Rosen led off with a single. Rosen advanced to second as Chad Martin took first by being hit by a pitch, putting the runner in scoring position. Peter Cimini earned the RBI with a single to center that allowed Rosen to come around and score. Van Zant closed out the game with another shutout inning.
Game Two Recap – Wesleyan 3, Bowdoin 2
After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Bowdoin evened the score in the top of the fourth. Cole DiRoberto opened the inning with a leadoff double and advanced to third off another Cimini hit. Sean Mullaney laid down a bunt that allowed DiRoberto to score and tie the game.
Wesleyan put two more on the board in the fifth, but greater damage was avoided as the Polar Bears escaped another bases loaded situation. Bowdoin pulled within one run as Rosen pushed Tom Wells across the plate in the seventh. Wells led off the inning with a double to center and advanced to third on a groundout.
Harry Ridge suffered the loss on the mound, going five innings while allowing just five hits. The junior walked three and fanned four. Michael Staes, Logan Simon, and Jon Fraser all saw time on the mound. Fraser recorded a strikeout in the final inning. Nick Cooney pitched 6.1 innings for Wesleyan with one walk and eight strikeouts. Sam Elias came in to record the save.
Bowdoin returns to action on Monday evening at 6:45 p.m. in a rescheduled game at Saint Joseph's College.
