Men's Hockey Holds Off Amherst For Big Conference Victory

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Danny Palumbo scored the go-ahead goal with 7.6 seconds remaining in the second period as the Bowdoin College men's ice hockey defeated Amherst 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Watson Arena.

The oncoming Polar Bears improve to 12-5-3 (6-5-3 NESCAC) and are 5-1-1 in their last seven outings. Ninth-ranked Amherst sees their five-game winning streak come to an end as they fall to 14-4-2 (10-4-0 NESCAC).

Bowdoin killed off a couple of early Amherst penalties and took the lead on a great individual effort by John McGinnis. McGinnis picked the pocket of a Jeff defender, and beat Amherst netminder Danny Vitale with a breakaway backhander inside the right post at 4:37. Bowdoin doubled their lead late in the period when Stevie Van Siclen won a faceoff in the offensive zone back to John-Alexander Kourkoulis, who ripped a slapshot from the blue line under the crossbar at 15:42.

Bowdoin increased their lead to three goals early in the second period when they enjoyed an extended possession in offensive zone, kept in by Ryan Collier's glove along the boards. The puck came to the stick of Connor Quinn, skated across slot and wristed a shot that was saved by Vitale. Quinn jumped on the rebound, however, to make it 3-0 just 3:47 into the frame.

Amherst stormed back late in the period with three goals in a span of 5:08. David White started the rally by putting home a shot from the high slot at 13:55. Less than four minutes later, Bowdoin looked to clear their defensive zone, but left a turnover in between the circles right in front of goaltender Peter Cronin. Topher Flanagan picked up the loose puck found the back of the net from in close at 17:19. Amherst stunned the Bowdoin crowd again with just 57 seconds left in the period with a shorthanded goal to tie the game. Mike Cashman and Conor Brown broke out on a 2x1 and Cashman put home a feed from his teammate to make it 3-3. Bowdoin was able to bounce back before intermission, however, converting on the power play as Danny Palumbo tucked home the puck on the back post with just 7.6 seconds remaining in the period.

That proved to be the game winner as Bowdoin's defense made the lead stand, blocking several shots in the final period, including a diving stop on a breakaway by Quinn. Cronin stood tall as well, stopping all seven shots he faced, including a back-to-back chances by Amherst's Xavier Louis Reed with under five minutes to play.

Bowdoin finished with a 40-26 edge in shots and went 1-3 on the power play. Amherst went 0-5 with the extra man. Cronin ended with 23 saves for the Polar Bears while Vitale made 36 for the Jeffs. Brown had two assists for Amherst while Van Siclen had a pair of assists for Bowdoin.

Both teams will return to action next Friday night in Connecticut, as Bowdoin heads to Trinity for a 7:30 p.m. start and Amherst faces Connecticut College at 7:00 p.m.
