Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity men's hockey team captured a 5-4 win over visiting Bowdoin in a high-scoring back and forth game which saw six lead changes Friday night.
The loss to Trinity (18-2-1, 13-1-1 NESCAC) snapped a three-game win streak for the Polar Bears who now sit at 12-6-3 (6-6-3 NESCAC). The Bantams clinched the top spot in the NESCAC postseason with the victory.
Bowdoin jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead off a power play goal 6:54 into the first period. Taking advantage of the man-up opportunity, Ryan Collier tipped in a shot from Mitch Barrington. The goal was the first of four the two teams combined for in the first period, all coming with an extra skater on the ice. Trinity evened the game at 1-1 off an open shot by Sean Orlando. The Bantams took their first lead of the game 13:39 into the contest as Jackson Brewer tallied his team's second consecutive goal. Bowdoin capped the high scoring first with an equalizer from John McGinnis. Tim Coffey took a shot that was deflected, but McGinnis was able to clean up the rebound to send the two teams into intermission knotted at two.
Matthew Melanson combined with Spencer Altunez to regain the lead 12:11 into the second frame, only to have Trinity answer three minutes later. Coffey and McGinnis combined for Bowdoin's fourth and final goal of the game with two minutes remaining in the period, but once again the Bantams came back with an equalizer. After two high scoring periods, the only goal of the third frame would be the deciding point in a back-and-forth rematch of last year's NESCAC semifinal. Jackson Brewer bested Bowdoin netminder Max Fenkell to capture the win.
Fenkell made 35 total stops in net for the Polar Bears, while Nathaniel Heilbron made 22 on the opposite side.
The Polar Bears travel to Wesleyan for a 3:00 p.m. contest Saturday afternoon
