Polar Bear Preview
The Polar Bears are the lone unbeaten team in Division III field hockey and enter the tournament ranked 1st in the NFHCA Division III poll…the Polar Bears captured their eighth NESCAC Tournament crown last weekend with a 2-1 win over Middlebury…Bowdoin has permitted just 12 goals in 18 games this season, allowing only two multi-goal games by an opponent, while recording nine shutouts…In All-NESCAC awards this week, Bowdoin senior Rachel Kennedy was named the NESCAC Player of the Year…she established new school records in career goals (98) and points (214) earlier this season…Kim Kahnweiler was named the conference Defensive Player of the Year and was joined by Kennedy and Kimmy Ganong as First Team All-NESCAC selections…Kelsey Mullaney and Mettler Growney were named Second Team All-NESCAC while head coach Nicky Pearson was recognized as the league's Coach of the Year…earlier this season Pearson surpassed the 300 win mark for her career, becoming the 16th coach in Division III history to reach the plateau.
Polar Bears In NCAA Tournament Play
Bowdoin is making its 13th NCAA Tournament appearance and sixth consecutive trip… the Polar Bears have won four of the last eight Division III National Championships (2007, '08, '10, '13)…Bowdoin owns a 27-8 record all-time in NCAA Tournament play and have won 23 of their last 26 matches in the championship…Bowdoin is 63-1 in its last 64 matches against non-NESCAC opponents, with its only loss to a non-conference team since 2006 coming in last year's NCAA title match to TCNJ…The Polar Bears are 15-0 all-time in NCAA Tournament games at Ryan Field…the Polar Bears have winning records against all three potential regional opponents vs. Wellesley (16-2 all-time, 13 straight wins dating back to 2004), Keene State (1-0, win came in 2011 NCAA Tournament), UNE (1-0 all-time, first meeting came this season).
