Field Hockey Advances to NCAA Second Round After Commanding Win Over Scranton

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin field hockey team extended its season with an NCAA First Round win over visiting University of Scranton 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
 
The Polar Bears are perfect on Ryan Field in NCAA play and head to Babson with a 19-7 record this season. The Royals won the Landmark Conference Championship to earn the automatic qualifier to the tournament and end the year at 17-4.
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin did not find the net in the first quarter, but the flood gates blew open in the second. Ella Davies got the team started with a finish on the left post on a corner cross from Emily Ferguson.
  • Ferguson tallied a hat-trick of her own that included two second quarter goals. Ferguson and Davies traded roles for her tally in the 21st minute and added a solo effort one minute later.
  • Just 40 seconds into the third quarter, Charlotte Crawford sent a beautiful cross from the right wing to Mackay Bommer. Bommer, in front of the net, swept the ball past Maclean Thuermer.
  • Ferguson capped her hat-trick in the final 1:10 of the third quarter.
  • Hannah Balmelli scored two fourth quarter goals to push the Polar Bears to seven.
 
By the Numbers
  • Lauren O'Donald made one save in 49 minutes of play. The senior goalie made a slide tackle on a breakaway opportunity. Eva Filipponi played the final 11 minutes of the game.
  • Thuermer made seven stops, including saving a penalty stroke.
  • Bowdoin outshot the Royals 20-1 with a 15-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Polar Bears earned nine penalty corners and allowed two.

  • Bowdoin travels to Babson for an 11:00 a.m. second round game. The Polar Bears and Beavers played earlier in the season with Babson securing a 1-0 win.
