Field Hockey Delivers Pearson's 300th, Wraps Perfect Regular Season

Box Score

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Bowdoin College field hockey team completed the fifth perfect regular season in school history, and delivered the 300th career win for head coach Nicky Pearson, in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Tufts on Wednesday evening.

Bowdoin concludes the 2015 regular season with a perfect 15-0 (10-0 NESCAC) record. This is the fifth undefeated regular season in program history (1972, 2005, 2007, 2011). Tufts finishes third in the NESCAC standings with a 10-5 overall mark, including a 7-3 record in conference play.

It is the 300th career win for Bowdoin head coach Nicky Pearson, who becomes just the 16th coach in Division III history to reach the plateau. In her 20th season, Pearson owns a 300-57 career record (.840).

Also, in the victory, senior Rachel Kennedy notched her 92nd career goal, equaling the school's career record established by Lindsay McNamara '09.

How It Happened

  • Bowdoin jumped out to an early lead 2:11 into the contest off a successful penalty corner conversion by Kim Kahnweiler. Kahnweiler buried her shot from the top of the circle after receiving a feed from Mettler Growney as the inserter.
  • Tufts responded with an equalizer in the 12th minute, taking advantage of its second penalty corner of the game. Dominique Zarrella notched the score after deflecting a shot from Dakota Sikes-Keilp.
  • The two teams entered halftime tied, but Bowdoin scored another early goal in the second to jump out to a quick 2-1 advantage. Liz Znamierowski finished off a feed from Kimmy Ganong just 1:03 into the half allowing Bowdoin to regain the lead.
  • Zarrella tallied her second of the game, in a similar fashion to the first, to even the score ten minutes into the half. Zarrella again deflected a drive from the circle, this time from Elle Chrupcala.
  • Chrupcala gave the Jumbos their first and only lead of the evening ten minutes later following another successful corner. This time Chrupcala was credited with the goal as Sikes-Keilp tallied another assist.
  • The Polar Bears scored a pair of goals in the final ten minutes of play to take the 4-3 victory. Ganong tied the game with 7:45 to play, collecting a rebound off an Emily McColgan shot that she cracked to the upper left corner.
  • Following an illegal play on a Ganong shot with 3:04 remaining in the game, Bowdoin was awarded a penalty stroke. Rachel Kennedy tallied her seventh game-winning goal of the season as she converted on the opportunity to match McNamara's record.
  • Emily Polinski ended the day with 12 saves for Tufts as the Polar Bears outshot their hosts 24-9. Bowdoin held a 15-6 edge in penalty corners, with Clara Belitz stopping a pair of shots for the Polar Bears. Nicole Arata and Chrupcala each supplied the Jumbos with a defensive save.
