AMHERST, Mass. – The Bowdoin College Field Hockey team turned the corner on a midweek loss to Bates with a second-half scoring frenzy at Amherst winning in 3-0 fashion on Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears are now 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in league play while Mammoths suffer their first loss of the season for a 2-1 standing and a 1-1 ledger in the NESCAC.

Game Highlights

• After a scoreless opening half, the Polar Bears broke free in the fifth minute of the third period with Emily Ferguson netting her team-leading fourth goal of the season with the play being set up by Charlotte Crawford who delivered a cross from the corner for a shot from the left side by Hannah Balmelli. Crawford followed the shot by Balmelli and found the back of the net for the 1-0 edge.

• The Polar Bears continued to hold offensive momentum into the final stanza with Crawford scoring her first goal of the season 17 seconds into play for a quick two-goal advantage with under 15 minutes to go.

• Fei Yang-Sady added to the goal total, capitalizing on a penalty corner with Ella Davies earning an assist on the tip-in goal by Yang-Sady in the 53rd minute to complete the 3-0 shutout.

• Eva Filipponi and the Bowdoin defense earned its first shutout of the campaign as the offense snapped a perfect save percentage from Amherst goalkeeper Grace Puchalski, who entered the game without giving up a goal in the first two games of the season. 

By the Numbers

• The 3-0 shutout marks the first shutout of the Mammoths since Oct. 30, 2021, when the Polar Bears won 1-0 over Amherst in the NESCAC Quarterfinal.

• Bowdoin held a 5-3 shot on goal edge as Amherst had a slight 10-7 lead in total shots.

• Filipponi made three stops in the second half enroute to her first shutout of the season. 

• The Mammoths had a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners.
