BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin field hockey team opened its home schedule with a dramatic 2-1 regulation win against Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears are 3-1 (2-1 NESCAC) after handing the Cardinals (3-1, 0-1 NESCAC) a loss in their conference opener.
Game Highlights
- Bowdoin earned a pair of quick corners to begin the game, but was unable to convert. The teams end the first quarter knotted at 0-0.
- Wesleyan broke through five minutes into the second quarter to go ahead 1-0. Teddy Tolbert carried the ball to the top right side of the circle and fired an off-balance cross to the far side. Emilia Napolitan deflected the ball on the opposite post to best Eva Filipponi for the lead.
- The Polar Bears evened the game five minutes later. Fei Yang-Sady drew the defense to the right side and pushed a shot to the back post for a finish from Hannah Balmelli.
- The teams traded chances through the third and fourth quarters but remained tied until less than five minutes remained in the game.
- Bowdoin pressured the Wesleyan defense with a series of corners and shots before Katie Athanasoulas worked against a prone Keira O'Flynn to muscle through a goal.
