BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin field hockey team completed a perfect weekend with a 1-0 upset victory over Williams on Sunday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (4-1, 3-1 NESCAC) handed the fifth-ranked Ephs (5-1, 4-1 NESCAC) their first loss of the season. Bowdoin completed a perfect weekend against two top-ten teams.

Game Highlights

After a scoreless first quarter, Bowdoin nearly broke through in the final minutes of the second. Fei Yang-Sady worked to shove the ball through Ellie Smith's pads at the goalline, but the Williams goalie denied the attempt.
Eva Filipponi made a pivotal save four minutes into the third quarter to keep the game scoreless. Haley McAuslin came charging down the left wing with a breakaway opportunity into the circle. Filipponi patiently shadowed the forward, never overcommitting to the play, and forced McAuslin to take a low angle shot directly into Filipponi's kickers.
Bowdoin came back down to the Williams end just a minute later and scored the eventual game-winner. After several restarts along the right sideline, Ella Davies sent a long sweep in from the 25. The ball connected with Hannah Balmelli's stick and found the back of the cage.

By the Numbers

Neither team took a shot in the fourth quarter as both teams finished the game with seven total shots. Bowdoin held a 5-2 edge in shots on goal.
Filipponi ended the day with a two save shutout.
Smith made four stops, including three in the second quarter.
Bowdoin held a 5-3 edge in penalty corners.
The win marks back-to-back one goal wins for the Polar Bears against Williams.
