Men's Hockey Ices Huskies in Midweek Showdown

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin men's ice hockey team tallied two goals in every period on its way to a 6-1 home victory over Southern Maine on Wednesday evening.

The Polar Bears rebound from the weekend's 0-1-1 mark to improve to 10-5-3 on the season, while dropping the Huskies to 4-14.

Bowdoin took the quick 1-0 lead 1:31 into the opening period off a scrum goal by Zach Kokosa. With several Polar Bear players scrambling in front of the net, Southern Maine goalie Kyle Shapiro was unable to cover and control the puck before Kokosa would poke it through. With only 57 second remaining, the Polar Bears picked up their second of the game. Camil Blanchet set up beside the Huskies' net and slid a pass to Daniel McMullen inside the left hashes for the 2-0 advantage.

Midway through the second frame Bowdoin pushed its lead to three by converting on the power play. Blanchet passed to Kendall Culbertson who wrapped around the back of Southern Maine's net before dishing a pass to Mitch Barrington. Barrington's quick shot flew left of Shapiro to make the score 3-0. The sophomore tallied his second of the period with five minutes remaining, collecting a pass from Blanchet, by sending a blistering shot past the Southern Maine goalie.

Nate DelGiudice came in to play the final 20 minutes in net for Southern Maine, making a glove save on a Matthew Sullivan shot at point-blank range. Minutes later, Ryan Collier dumped the puck into Southern Maine territory where Spencer Altunez collected it and skated around the back of the Huskies' net. Altunez tucked the puck just inside the left post for the 5-0 lead. After dishing out a pair of assists, Blanchet netted his first goal of the game off tic-tac-toe passes from Culbertson and Jason Nawrocki. Chad O'Brien spoiled the Bowdoin shutout with 24 second remaining, streaking down the left wing and besting Peter Cronin for Southern Maine's lone goal of the night.

Cronin made 16 total saves in net for Bowdoin, while putting in a complete game. Shapiro made 29 saves in two periods of action, with DelGiudice stopping 16 shots in the third frame.

The Polar Bears are off this weekend, returning to the ice on February 6 at home against Hamilton with a 7:00 p.m. start. The Huskies host the University of New England at 7:00 p.m. this Friday.
