Men's Hockey Rallies For Late Tie at Middlebury

Box Score

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team scored with an extra attacker with 1:22 remaining as the Polar Bears earned a 2-2 road tie at Middlebury in Kenyon Arena.

Bowdoin stands at 9-4-3 (4-4-3 NESCAC) while the Panthers move to 6-6-3 (3-3-3 NESCAC). Bowdoin visits Williams on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Bowdoin wasted little time, jumping on the board just 15 seconds into the contest. A pass deflected off the skates of a Middlebury defender before coming to Ryan Collier, who snapped home a shot to the far side from the left circle for his second of the year.

Middlebury answered the 2:21 mark, with the third of the season for Evan Neugold. After taking a pass from Terrance Goguen, Neugold carried the puck for several seconds, eventually wristing a shot past a screened Max Fenkell from the left point.

The Panthers had a couple more chances midway through the period, but a shot from Vincent Gisonti in a two-on-one was denied before Fenkell stopped a backhanded bid by Mike Najjar.

The second period saw very limited scoring opportunities as the Panthers held a slim 9-8 shots advantage.

Middlebury took a 2-1 lead 1:46 into the third period when Najjar scored his fourth of the year on a rebound after the original shot from Cameron Romoff was saved. The Panthers had another good look at 7:40, but Mark McLellan missed high on a two-on-one break.

Middlebury had a great chance to gain some breathing room, going on a five-minute power play. The team's best chance to score came when a shot by David Belluche from the left point was saved, as the rebound trickled to McLellan on the doorstep. He was able to just tip the puck in the air as it went parallel to the goal line before being cleared away.

After killing the major, Bowdoin pulled Fenkell and netted the equalizer with 1:22 remaining. Matt Sullivan cut to the goal on the left side before sliding a pass to Jason Nawrocki, who wristed a shot into the back of the net for his first career goal.

Middlebury went on the power play 26 seconds into overtime, but could not pot the game-winner. Its best chance to score came when Neugold's pass was deflected just wide of the net by McLellan. Bowdoin killed the remainder of the penalty as the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Middlebury finished with a 36-19 shots advantage in the contest as Stephen Klein made 17 saves in goal. Fenkell finished with 32 stops for the Polar Bears.
