Baseball Splits Sunday Twinbill Against Bates

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – The Bowdoin baseball team rebounded in its second game of the day against Bates to split Sunday afternoon's NESCAC East Division doubleheader.

Bates took two of three in the weekend series with a 13-7 victory in the day's first contest, and improved to 8-9 overall (2-2 NESCAC). Bowdoin avoided the series sweep with a 6-2 win in the second game to improve 11-6-1 (3-3 NESCAC).

In game one, the Bobcats struck first in the opening inning with back-to-back RBI doubles from Griff Tewksbury and Kevin Davis. Another base hit allowed Bates to take a quick 3-0 lead. Tewksbury tallied his second RBI of the game in the second inning putting the ball in play and allowing Conor Reenstierna to score from third. Bowdoin's offense began to produce in their next at bat with John Lefeber scoring off a balk, and Erik Jacobsen blasting a two-run homer. Carrying a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the third inning, Bates pushed another run across the plate off a sacrifice fly from Sam Berry.

Bowdoin rallied to take the lead in the top of the fourth, beginning with a leadoff homerun from Cole DiRoberto. Aaron Rosen hit a two run double immediately followed by another RBI single from Martin to take a 7-5 lead. The Polar Bears were unable to hold off the Bobcats, however, as Bates put up three more runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to rally for the win.

Bowdoin got on the board first in the second game of the day, as Kyle LeBlanc drove home the team's first run with a double to left. Jay Loughlin kept the Bates bats in check, going five scoreless innings on the mound while allowing just two hits with six strikeouts. The Polar Bears added five more runs to their total in the top of the sixth to take a 6-0 lead. Peter Cimini cleared the left field fence for a two run homer, with Chris Nadeau bringing home another run off a single to left. Bowdoin pushed two more runs across the plate, as Rosen earned a bases loaded walk and LeBlanc would score off a fielding error before the inning was over. Bates broke the shutout with a pair of runs in the ninth inning, but was unable to close the gap any further as the Polar Bears took the 6-2 win.

Pending field conditions, Bowdoin is likely to play its home opener next week. An announcement about the upcoming schedule will be made on Monday.
