Southern Maine Edges Bowdoin Despite Four-Hit Day From Rosen

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The University of Southern Maine scored three times in the fifth inning en route to a 5-2 win at Bowdoin on Tuesday afternoon.

The fifth-ranked Huskies improve to 27-8 this season after earning their second win of the season against the Polar Bears. Bowdoin, which was playing its final regular-season home game of the year, fell to 17-14-1.

USM got on the board in the fourth inning when Sam Dexter doubled to lead off the frame and moved to third one out later. Chris Bernard lofted a sacrifice fly to left to score Dexter and give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Jake Glauser led off the fifth inning with a single and moved to second on a base hit by Troy Thibodeau. After Matt Bender laid a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third, Paul McDonough tapped a grounder to short that scored Glauser. Bowdoin appeared to be out of the inning one play later, but a throwing error extended the inning and allowed Thibodeau to score. Dexter singled home John Carey as the Huskies increased their advantage to 4-0.

Bowdoin cut into the lead in the sixth when Kyle LeBlanc singled and advanced to second on a throwing error. Aaron Rosen doubled him home to make it a 4-1 game. But USM got the run back in the eighth when Carey delivered a two-out single that plated Thibodeau. Rosen ripped an RBI single to score Cole DiRoberto in the ninth for the Polar Bears, but that would be as close as Bowdoin would get.

Logan Carman worked seven innings for USM, allowing no earned runs and striking out three to collect the victory. Harry Ridge took the loss for the Polar Bears after working five innings and permitting a pair of earned runs.

Dexter, Bernard and Thibodeau had two hits apiece for the Huskies. Aaron Rosen had a four-hit day in the loss for the Polar Bears
