Baseball Falls in Doubleheader to Tufts, Misses NESCAC Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Tufts University baseball team secured its bid to the NESCAC Tournament with a Sunday sweep of Bowdoin, 5-1 and 14-0, at Pickard Field.

The seventh-ranked Jumbos improve to 27-3 (8-2 NESCAC) and can earn the top seed and hosting rights for the tournament with one win in its doubleheader next Saturday against Bates. The Polar Bears have been eliminated from playoff contention and stand at 17-13-1 (5-7 NESCAC) on the year.

A pair of strong pitching performances, combined with a potent offense, led Tufts to the sweep. Tim Superko went six strong innings in the opener, scattering six hits and allowing just one earned run. The Jumbos supplied all the offense they would need in the first inning as they scored four times, with the big blow coming on a two-out, two-run single by Nick Custumpas. Bowdoin got to Superko in the fifth as Sean Mullaney singled home Duncan Taylor to make it 4-1. But Superko avoided further trouble and Wade Hauser got the run back in the top of the sixth for Tufts with a two-out single that plated Tom Petry.

Eric Jacobsen took the loss for Bowdoin, allowing four earned runs in two innings of work. James Howard led Tufts with three hits in the win.

The Tufts offense exploded for 14 runs and 12 hits in game two and took advantage of six Bowdoin errors and nine walks by Polar Bear pitchers to earn their second straight win. The big inning proved to be a five-run third for the Jumbos, as Cody McCallum laced a two-run single to spark the rally as part of a three-hit, three-RBI day for the Tufts leftfielder. Tufts starter Christian Sbily didn't need much help as he tossed a five-hit shutout, striking out five batters in the victory.

Matt Moser also had three hits in the win for the Jumbos. Jay Loughlin took the setback for Bowdoin by allowing four earned runs in 2.1 innings.

Tufts will return to action on Monday with a home game against Eastern Connecticut (4:00 p.m.). Bowdoin will host Southern Maine in its next outing on Tuesday afternoon (4:00 p.m.).
