Bowdoin and Williams Split Saturday Baseball Doubleheader

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin and Williams baseball teams split a doubleheader at Pickard Field on Saturday with the Polar Bears taking game one, 4-2, and the Ephs winning game two in 10 innings, 7-6.

Bowdoin stands at 14-11-1 this season while Williams is 8-11 after today's action.

Erik Jacobsen tossed six excellent innings and Aaron Rosen went 4-4 to propel Bowdoin to victory in the opener. Jacobsen allowed two earned runs over six frames, striking out five, before giving way to Jon Fraser, who pitched the seventh for the save. Williams had taken an early lead when Thomas Stephens singled home Matt Kastner in the first inning, but the Polar Bears quickly responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Peter Cimini doubled home Rosen to tie the game and Sam Canales delivered a two-run single to score Chad Martin and Cimini to make it a 3-1.

Williams drew to within 3-2 in the sixth when Phil McGovern doubled to left, bringing home Luke Pierce. But Jacobsen got out the jam with a pair of pop-outs and Aaron Rosen ripped a run-scoring triple in the sixth to up the lead back to two runs, 4-2. After a lead-off walk, Fraser induced a double play and struck out Jack Roberts to seal the win. In addition to Rosen, Martin had a multi-hit game for Bowdoin with a pair of base hits. Pierce went 2-3 in the loss for Williams, as Thomas Murphy took the loss by allowing three earned runs over 5.1 innings of work.

After a tightly-played, well-pitched opener, the teams combined for 13  runs, 21 hits and five errors in the nightcap as Williams . Bowdoin grabbed a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning when Rosen doubled and came home on an RBI single from Cole DiRoberto. But the Ephs rallied in the top of the sixth as David Rosas ripped a run-scoring double that plated Marco Hernan and Jack Roberts followed with an RBI groundout to score Jack Cloud and give the visitors a 5-4 lead.

Bowdoin tied it at 5-5 in the seventh when Martin doubled home Cimini, but Williams regained the lead in the top of the ninth, 6-5, when an error and sac bunt moved Beau Horan to third with one out. Pierce lofted a sacrifice fly to give Williams the lead. Consecutive singles sparked a game-tying rally for Bowdoin in the bottom of the ninth, and Sam Canales beat out a potential game-ending double play as Cimini came home with the tying run, forcing the game into extra innings.

In the top of the tenth, Stephens led off with a single and stole second for the Ephs. With two outs, Rosas lifted a single to center field that brought Stephens around to score. Eddie Kelly slammed the door for Williams in the bottom of the frame, tossing a 1-2-3 frame to earn the save. Charlie Baxt earned the win in relief for Williams. Steve Marino got the start, allowing four earned runs over 6.1 innings. John Lefeber took the loss for Bowdoin in relief, allowing one earned run in four innings of work. Harry Ridge started for Bowdoin and went six innings, scattering eight hits and allowing three earned runs.

Bowdoin will return to action Monday at Thomas for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. Williams will host RPI on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
