Box Score 2 HARTFORD, Conn. - The Bowdoin College baseball team claimed a doubleheader split with Trinity on Saturday to earn a NESCAC East Division series win against the Bantams. The Polar Bears earned a 6-0 win in the opener before falling in a rain-shortened 4-3 loss in the nightcap.
Bowdoin is now 10-4-1 on the year and 2-1 in conference play, while Trinity moves to 5-10 and 1-2 in league contests.
In the opener, Bowdoin's Harry Ridge tossed a gem, going six innings, while scattering two hits and striking out four to earn the victory. Henry Van Zant worked a perfect ninth inning for the Polar Bears, striking out the side. On the bump for Trinity, Peter Burrows went five innings allowing three runs, two of which were earned, while fanning four batters in a losing effort.
Offensively, Aaron Rosen led the attack for Bowdoin going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Chad Martin and Erik Jacobsen each had multi-hit games for the Polar Bears.
In the weekend finale, Trinity senior Ryan Carr pitched 7.2 innings to earn the victory for the Bantams in a weather-shortened contest. Carr allowed two runs and struck out five, while giving up five hits. Patrick Carbone recorded the final out of the eighth to earn his second save. On the other side, Jay Loughlin was the tough-luck loser for Bowdoin, allowing just one earned run in five innings of work.
Trinity built a four-run lead before Bowdoin battled back into the contest, scoring three runs in the top of the eighth. Sean Mullaney smacked an RBI single to make it a three-run contest. Later in the frame, both Aaron Rosen and Chad Martin had two-out run-scoring hits for the Polar Bears, trimming the lead to 4-3. The Bantams loaded the bases with two outs in the home half of the eighth, but the game was called due to the rain and field conditions.
The Polar Bears were scheduled to play at Southern Maine on Tuesday, but that game has already been postponed due to field conditions. Bowdoin is slated to play Bates in a three-game set next weekend, but those games are also unlikely to be played as scheduled. More information and scheduling adjustments will be announced this week.
