NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Bowdoin College men's hockey team scored a pair of goals in a 13 second span of the second period to pull away for a 5-1 NESCAC victory at Connecticut College Friday night.
The Polar Bears improved their record to 14-7-2 with a 9-7-1 record in the NESCAC. The Camels had their five game unbeaten streak snapped, falling to 8-13-2 (7-9-1 NESCAC). Bowdoin can secure the fourth seed in the upcoming NESCAC Tournament with a win or a tie on Saturday in its regular season finale at Tufts.
Bowdoin jumped out on top 7:25 into regulation when Colin Downey took a pass from Connor Quinn and unloaded in the slot for his team-leading 19th goal of the season. The Camels pulled even with 6:33 to play in the first as Zach Shapiro buried a wrist shot from the left point. Bowdoin regained the lead when Kendall Culbertson scored a goal in transition at the 15:07 mark.
With 1:50 remaining in the second period, Mitch Barrington had a nice scoring bid for the Polar Bears when he delivered a blistering slap shot from the high slot but Mike Petchonka was able to close the pads to plug up the five-hole. Finally, with 1:26 remaining, the visitors cashed in on a power-play. Kokosa fired a shot from point-blank range and Petchonka got a piece of it but Culbertson pounced on the rebound in the slot and stuffed one in to make it a 3-1 game. On the ensuing faceoff, Bowdoin tacked on another goal when they induced a Camel turnover. John McGinnis broke free for his seventh goal of the season to make it a 4-1 game.
Joseph Lace tallied Bowdoin's fifth goal on a shorthanded breakaway with 12.3 seconds left in the game to close out the 5-1 victory for the Polar Bears.
Bowdoin held a 38-to-21 advantage in shots, going 1-for-3 on their power play. Petchonka finished with 33 saves between the pipes for the Camels, with Steve Messina stopping 20 shots for Bowdoin.
The Polar Bears will face-off at Tufts at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
