Men's Hockey Uses Big Third Period to Rally Past Southern Maine

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine – The Bowdoin men's hockey team scored four third period goals to get back on track with a 4-1 win over host Southern Maine in the team's final game of 2014.

Bowdoin improves to 7-2-1 after dropping a pair of conference games over the weekend, sending the Polar Bears into the new year on a high note. Southern Maine drops to 1-9-0, extending their losing streak to nine.

The Huskies took the lead with 2:36 remaining in the first period, despite being outshot 7-2. John Waghorne put his team ahead on an even strength goal that would remain the game's only goal through the end of the second frame. Waghorne scored his first career goal from the left point.  Brad McGovern dug the puck out of the right wing corner and pushed a pass back to Cole Kippenstein who fired a cross-ice pass to Waghorne.

After being shutout through the opening 40 minutes of play, Bowdoin broke through with a four goal outburst, including three in a span of 3:29. Matthew Melanson got the scoring started on the power play 2:21 into the frame, followed quickly by Chris Fenwick just over a minute later. Melanson got his stick on a shot taken from the point by Ryan Collier to redirect the puck past USM rookie goalie Kyle Shapiro at 2:21 for his first career goal. Fenwick put away the game-winner after redirecting a shot from John Kourkoulis. Matthew Lison poured it on with his team's third goal in just over three minutes of play to put Bowdoin ahead 3-1. Fenwick capped the game with a deflection off a shot from Kourkoulis at the point midway through the final period.

Max Fenkell played a complete game between the pipes for Bowdoin, making 15 saves.  Shapiro took the net for Southern Maine and stopped 28 shots.

The Polar Bears return to the ice on January 9, 7:00 p.m., at Hamilton.
