Men's Soccer Falls To Brandeis in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Box Score

WALTHAM, Mass.  - The Bowdoin College men's soccer team's magical postseason run came to an end on Sunday as the Polar Bears dropped a 1-0 decision to Brandeis in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The NESCAC champions conclude a fantastic season with a record of 10-7-3. With the win, the Judges improve to 19-2 on the season and advance to the Round of 16 for the third year in a row. They will battle Amherst in a Third Round match next weekend.

Brandeis controlled play throughout the first half, outshooting Bowdoin, 9-0, although the Polar Bears very nearly had a goal in the fourth minute off the head of Matt Dias Costa, who was ruled offsides. The Judges put three of their shots on net in the first 45 minutes, but Bowdoin's Stevie van Siclen was up to the task. His best stop came in the 42nd minute off the foot of Brandeis's Foti Andreo after a give-and-go with Brandon Miskin.

The Judges had a couple of early chances in the second half from senior Tyler Savonen, who chipped wide in the 47th minute after dribbling through the defense, then had a cracking shot from just outside the box headed away by Bowdoin's Nabil Odulate in the 51st.

Bowdoin finally tested Brandeis senior Joe Graffy in the 60th minute, when Hunter Miller chipped from just outside the box following a short corner. The Judges' next two attempts were not on frame before Miskin notched the game-winner. The play started with a failed clearing attempt by Bowdoin at the right of the 18-yard box. Sophomore Josh Ocel collected the ball and spotted Miskin streaking towards goal. Ocel delivered a perfect service to Miskin's head, and the rookie redirected it inside the far post past the outstretched arms of Van Siclen.

The visitors had one last attempt to equalize in the 79th minute. A free kick from near midfield was played into the box. Polar Bear forward Sam White headed to Graffy from close range, but the Judge snatched it out of the air to help preserve the victory.

Brandeis finished with an 18-4 edge in total shots, 5-2 in shots on goal. Van Siclen had three saves in the losing effort, while Graffy made two stops.
